[Lesson 5] Control And Filter Spam Comments

By default, the WordPress site displays all comments being made by visitors on your website. However, not all these comments are authentic. A big share of those comments turns out to be ‘Spam’.
Thus, controlling spammy comments add to your website’s security. Further, there are different ways in which this could be done, some of which are:

Disable comments on your WordPress:

In case, you do not want comments on your website, you can disable it totally as:

Step 1 – Log in to your Astra dashboard

Step 2 – Go to Settings>discussions

Step 3 – Uncheck the box  ‘Allow people to post comments on new articles’

Allow comments for registered users:

To allow comment submission only by authentic users, do the following:

Step 1 – Log in to your Astra dashboard

Step 2 – Go to Settings>discussions

Step 3 – Check the box ‘Users must be registered and logged in to comment’

Review comments manually:

Think it better to manually approve or trash a comment? Enable that as below:

Step 2 – Go to Settings>discussions

Step 3 – Check the box ‘Comments must be manually approved’

Control Comments with Akismet Plugin:

The last part could also be checked by a plugin. Well, there are a lot of plugins on WordPress that do the work, but we like Akismet the best. Here is how you can control comments by Akismet:

Step 1 – Install Akismet on your WordPress

Step 2 – Go to the Akismet Plugin

Step 3 – Check the box ‘Silently discard the worst and most pervasive comments’
